notes |
Okay, really rare stuff here. This is a test pressing of the 7" single for "We Had No Way Of
Knowing" by The Gadgets, which is originally found on their "Blue Album". This is courtesy of
longtime The The fan Dietmar, who got it off a guy in Chicago who ran a noise label. Neither
Dietmar or myself know very much about this one other than that. Like most Gadgets material,
especially the later stuff, there is some debate as to how much involvement had with these
tracks. "Acid Bath" appears to be exclusive as a B side to this single. There was a retail
version of this single in both 7" and 12" formats but I've yet to get my hands on a
copy. |

This promotional copy of Perfect from Italy has some very definitive markings. This Is The Day |
|
|
notes |
This one takes the cake. It's a Polish flexi for "This Is The Day" that comes
as a 5" postcard - totally bizzare! The postcard comes in a sleeve. The print run was limited
to 50 copies and the sound quality on the track is mono, not to mention absolutely attrocious.
Then again, nobody is buying this one for the quality of the sound. I believe the mix is the
same as on "Soul Mining". The back of the postcard lists the numbered edition of the print run
[ie. 31 out of 50, for example]. Eternal thanks to Dietmar, who lucked out getting this one
added into his collection so he could send us these rare scans. According to him, the quality
of the pressing of the grooves is so bad that you can hardly play it on a stereo. Apparently
another postcard exists for "Controversial Subject", but I've yet to have this confirmed. K3
Records churned out a series of these postcard singles for many other artists in the mid 80's
from what I can tell. Whether these are bootlegs or official releases is beyond me, but they
might very well be bootlegs. K3 also re-used their postcard designs for other artists. The
very same postcard they used for this song was also used for a rare Stranglers postcard [see
images below] and possibly other artists. |

This promotional album was meant to promote the Mind Bomb album and world tour. It has several live tracks and studio tracks but also has eight short segments spread between the tracks where Matt's is interviewed about his current band line-up and the Mind Bomb album. Both the vinyl and CD versions are the same. Kingdom Of Rain and This Is The Day are the same versions as on their respective albums. All the rest of the live tracks are from a concert in Sydney, Australia on August the 4th of 1989. The back of the album lists a series of tour dates in the "vs. The World" tour. This album is sometimes referred to as "Interchords" or "Interview And Live Music". No one title is completely correct, but fans seem to have become comfortable referring to this album as Alive seeing as it appears in big letters on the front cover and, quite frankly, sounds way cooler. |

This promotional album was meant to promote the "Mind Bomb" album and world tour. Some of the tracks on it had been previously unreleased when it came out, but it's all available now in other easier to find formats from what I understand. The design is similar to that of the "Alive" promo so my guess is that it was released around the same time by the same team. I'm not positive about some of the mixes of tracks [eg. "Uncertain Smile", "This Is The Day", etc.] as I don't own a copy. I've had conflicting reports about the product code - some insist that it's ESK 1958 but I don't know for sure. The CD is also apparently dedicated to Eugene Johnson, who I assume is one of Matt's brothers. I had heard that a brother of Matt's died during the start of the "vs. The World" tour and he cancelled the tour and rescheduled the dates so he could return home to his family, but that's hearsay. |

This is a promotional single for Kingdom Of Rain. Kingdom Of Rain was never released as a retail single but appears in different forms in a promotional format. The cover is a simple white sleeve with a center cutout to see the vinyl label. In the upper right corner of the white sleeve is a yellow sticker. The vinyl on these singles was a nice thick, high quality format that doesn't scratch very easily, which is good. The mix, however, on these rather rare B side tracks was rather low end with an usually absence of treble, which was bad. It is also one of the few places you can get these rare tracks from Pornography Of Despair. There is some dispute over the correct product code for this release - several appear on the sleeve and vinyl labels. Other valid candidates could include "EAS-1895-S1" or "XSS 01895A". |

Probably given out to record stores and radio stations as pre-promotion for the Dusk album. Not sure what the three tracks were that made up the single. Another person I spoke to said their copy came with a press sheet, a black and white promo photo of Matt, and a lyric book but no t-shirt. Not sure what version of "The Violence of Truth" that is but I'm assuming it's the remix. I do know that the live version of "Infected" is from the 1990 Royal Albert Hall show. |

This promotional 12" was released in the UK for DJs. It's similar to the Dogs Of Lust promotional CD which also includes two remixes. It comes in a simple black sleeve. The version I have [pictured below] comes with two stickers on the front but I'm not sure which, if any, actually came from Epic that way. |

[apparently a five track EP that includes Slow Emotion Replay, Dogs Of Lust [Spermicide Mix], and Dogs Of Lust [Germicide Mix] as well as two other tracks] |

notes |
This promotional version of Slow Emotion Replay was apparently released in Australia, but the sale I saw on eBay for it wasn't very descriptive. It's apparently five tracks, yet the person selling the single only mentioned three tracks appearing on it. Couldn't tell you much more about this release than that. |

This promotional 12" sampler for Dusk was released in Australia. Both sides of the sampler have the same three tracks. It comes in a plain white sleeve with an ordinary vinyl label. Although I haven't personally heard a copy of this sampler, I'd assume the live version of Infected is the same as the ones on the retail singles from the Dusk albums, that being from the Royal Albert Hall show in 1990. |

|
notes |
Ok, this one is pretty nifty. It's a gatefold double CD that has the "Silent Tongue" album as it's first half [unreleased at the time this promo appeared] and "45 RPM" as the second half. It was sold at The The's unique show at David Bowie's Meltdown Festival on June 25th of 2002. No idea as to how many copies of this exist or were sold at the show, but the number is reportedly "low". Also no word as to whether they will appear for sale during the fall tour that's planned for later this year. During the same show, a special edition of The The's 'zine, This Is The The Day, was available on every seat cushion for all to read - it's pictured below as well. Also, the "45 RPM" discs are the same as the regular ones, but the serial number on the rim of the CD doesn't read "Disc 1" like on the originals. |
