track listing

Controversial Subject, Black And White

notes

This is the first The The single, released a few years before their first album or even Matt's first solo album. It includes two songs from Matt, fairly exclusive to this item. Keith Laws, Matt Johnson, Tom Johnson and Triash made up the band on this occassion and the single was also produced by Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis of Wire fame.

Cold Spell Ahead, Hot Ice

notes

This is the second The The single, later re-issued on CD by Some Bizarre with a different cover. This is an interesting single in that "Hot Ice" is a track exclusive to it. "Cold Spell Ahead" is a bizarre, early version of "Uncertain Smile" done completely on a guitar and drum machine. About halfway through it almost turns into a whole different song. It's also much shorter than "Uncertain Smile" is and doesn't have any of that fantastic Jools Holland
piano work at the end of it.

notes

This was The The's first single before releasing their first album, "Soul Mining", of which "Uncertain Smile" was a part of. The 12" versions of "Uncertain Smile" are extended 12" mixes and "Waiting For The Upturn" is pretty much exclusive to this 12" single. Apparently, it was originally from the unreleased album, "The Pornography Of Despair". Not sure what version of "Soul Mining" appears on the 7" as a B side. There's also a long standing rumor about a 7" edition with "Dumb As Death's Head" on the B side - nobody has been able to prove this exists and it remains purely rumor.

There are several different versions of this single, as well as several different promotional versions worth looking into. The Australian 7" version has been issued as a promotional version as well, using a standard promo stamp to mark it. The Italian 7" also comes in a simple black sleeve, or so I'm told. The Holland 7" uses the album version of the single instead of the 7" mix.

notes

This was, of course, the single that broke The The on a major scale and still encapsulates the eighties for many people when they hear it. It's B sides, the two separate versions of "The Nature Of Virtue", remain some of the rarer tracks available. I'm not sure what versions of "Perfect" and "Uncertain Smile" appear on the Canadian 7".

There's also a version of the "Perfect" single that has a different cover and comes with "Fruit Of The Heart" and "Soup Of Mixed Emotions" as B-sides. That version was never released as a single for sales in stores and came with the first pressings of "Soul Mining" in the UK. Check the Albums section for information on that version.

notes

This is the single for "This Is The Day" off the "Soul Mining" album. The gatefold double 7" is probably the most sought after of the three versions of this single, as both "Absolute Liberation" and "Leap Into The Wind" only appear on this single.

Neither the 7" or 12" versions are noted as such on the singles, but both are different than the mix that appears on the "Soul Mining" album. The 7" version is a shorter mix, much like a radio edit. The 12" version is slightly longer than the album mix. Also, the version of "I've Been Waiting For Tomorrow [All Of My Life]" that appears on this single is different than the version that appears on the album - it's longer and has a different mix on the synth tracks.

notes

The single for "Sweet Bird Of Truth" has a few rarities. The CD and cassette versions have the 12" version of "Soul Mining", making the CD a good find as it's one of the few places you can get it in a digital format and with "Sleeping Juice" and "Harbour Lights".

Suprisingly, the 7" of Sweet Bird Of Truth is also different. It's a shorter, more radio edit-like version of the song, completely different from the two versions that have appeared on the "Infected" album. I don't know what version of the single appears on the limited edition 12". I'm assuming it's the 12" version but I'm not really sure.

notes

The single for "Heartland" has a few rarities. If you're collecting, the double 12" version is a must - it's one of the only places you can get "Fruit Of The Heart" and one of the few places you can get "Born In The New S.A.". "Fruit Of The Heart" also appears on the single that came with initial copies of "Soul Mining", but that's also hard to find. The double twelve inch was originally sold as a sealed pack with a sticker on the front, the first single being the same as the regular TRUTH T2 release. You can sometimes find the second part of the double twelve inch for sale on eBay, separated from the package and without the sticker. The cover for the TRUTH Q2 12" is somewhat different as well. The word "Heartland" appears in pink instead of red and the words "Sweet Bird Of Truth" are written overtop of it in red.

Neither the 7" or 12" versions are noted as such on the singles, but both are different than the mix that appears on the "Infected" album. The 7" version has a different start to the song and fades out. The 12" version is indentical to the version on the album, but it fades out naturally instead of ending in a locked groove effect like the one on the album does. The cassette also lists its version of "Heartland" as the "4'55 Version" - it's exactly the same as the versions on the album, ending with the locked groove effect.

I don't own the double 12" version edition, so I don't know what version of "Perfect" appears on that single. That IS an exclusive version of "Sweet Bird of Truth" that you're seeing on the cassette, however, although not by much. It's the 12" version, but there is a bunch of radio cockpit transmissions tacked onto the end of it that doesn't appear on any other single out there.

notes

The single for "Infected" has a lot of different formats with some great rarities. It's the only place you can get "Disturbed" and the original version of "The Sinking Feeling". My guess is that this "original version" is from "Pornography Of Despair" but I'm not sure. It's a very early mix that sounds about as bear bones as "Cold Spell Ahead" does. The Skullcrusher and Energy mixes of "Infected" can also be found spread throughout the different versions. The promotional copies of this single are also worth looking into as they have some of these mixes as well. There's also a 7" version that's different than the ones on the album. It also appears in the "Infected" movie and the European CD versions of the "Infected " album.

Steve Shill's The The discography lists the TRUTH 3 single as a 12", but my guess is it's actually a 7". I have yet to verify this though as I only have a Canadian 7".

One of the covers for the single shows the full painting Andy Dog did for this release, which was subsequently pulled from shelves, because it was controversial. This is the TRUTH Q3 cover, which depicts a demon masturbating. Matt talks briefly about this in an interview with Johnny Marr in which he states, "...the Infected 12” sleeve was great...and he's wearing the little marigold glove [laughs]. I liked that little touch as well. That was an interesting little story too because that sleeve had to be printed outside of the record company’s manufacturing plant because the workers there threw a bloody fit, when they saw it. They laid down their tools and point blank refused to have anything to do with it." The cover was apparently done as a 7" and 12", both pulled. They later resurfaced with the same product codes, but with the newer cover. The "non-offensive" cover depicts a demon's face. The "banned" version depicts a demon masturbating onto himself. There's also a disputed cover for a version with a yellow cover depicting a cow skull. Nobody seems to know what this is, but rumors are still flying - might have been promo art, might have been rejected art, I'm really just not sure. I've been told it's a 12" with the Skullcrusher mix on it, but I've never seen anything verified. Another rumor going around is that Andy Dog once said that the yellow cover was the original artwork, but was never intended to be used for the single.

There is some confusion as well as to what the track listing is on TRUTH Q3. Apparently the "banned" version and the "non-offensive" version have different track listings and there is some dispute as to whether a 7" version exists of the banned cover. I know the track listing for the "non-offensive" version of the 12" is correct.

notes

The single for "Slow Train To Dawn" doesn't have a lot of exclusive stuff. It does have "The Nature Of Virtue", but that appears other places as well. It also has the 12" version of "Slow Train To Dawn", but you're probably better offer aiming for the european CD of "Infected", which includes it as an extra track and in a nice digital format.

The version with the logo stencil is actually the same as the regular UK 12" [TENSE T1]. It just comes with a transparent plastic band logo, similar to the one that ships with the boxed set of "Gravitate To Me". The plastic logo sheet and the single are shrink wrapped together and a sticker on the outside marks it under the new product code [TENSE D1], but the actual vinyl is exactly the same.

Some 7" versions also came with stickers, but the mix is no different than the one on the album.

I am interested in finding out what version of "Heartland" and "The Nature Of Virtue" appears on the first US 12" edition, although I'm almost positive it's the second version of "The Nature Of Virtue". I know the version of "Heartland" on the second US edition is the same as the version on the album.

notes

If you're wanting to collect this single, the obvious choice is to look for either of the latter listed CD editions. They include two exclusive mixes of "The Beat[en] Generation", as well as "Angel" in digital formats. From what I've seen, all versions of "The Beat[en] Generation" that appear on these singles are exactly the same as the editions on "Mind Bomb" unless otherwise noted. The only one I'm not sure about is the 7", which I don't have.

The boxed set doesn't include many rarities but it does have a nice gold metal pin as well as a few postcards and a fold out poster for "The Beat[en] Generation".

This single is the first time that the "Previously Unreleased" version of "Soul Mining" was mentioned as such. It appeared on CD and cassette singles from the "Infected" album as the "12" Remix" even though it didn't actually appear on 12" until the "Mind Bomb" singles came out. Even though they have separate names, the versions are all exactly the same and it is not officially "Previously Unreleased" material at the time of this release.

notes

There are tons of different versions to this single. There's even a really sought after promo version with two exclusive mixes on it [not listed here, check promo section of this discography]. If you're looking to collect this single, the best ones to go after are probably the two CD versions, both the regular CD and picture CD. They include some exclusive mixes in a digital format.

The 10" version is somewhat different. It has a slightly different cover and doesn't promote itself as being "Armageddon Days Are Here [Again]" but, rather, a 10 EP called "The The vs. The World". Perhaps it was sold as a promotion for the tour as well but it's essentially another version of this single.

I'm not exactly sure which version appears at the beginning of the vinyl 12" or 10". I'm assuming it's the same version that's on "Mind Bomb", but I don't know for certain.

A lot of people have written me recently asking about the inclusion of a strange new cover for "Armageddon Days Are Here [Again]" in the liner notes of "45 RPM". Apparently Andrew drew up a cover for the single, but it was never used. There are no singles, promos, or rarities from smaller countries that have used this cover. It's simply an alternative cover, which is a shame, 'cause it was a much better cover choice.

Interpretations: Issue 1 - Shrunken Man

[Nothing [497 273-2], UK, CD, Summer 2000]

track listing

Shrunken Man [The The Interpretation], Shrunken Man [Daau Interpretation], Shrunken Man [John Parish], Shrunken Man [Foetus Interpretation]

notes

This EP sparked Matt's idea to start a project called The Others, of which this EP was apparently the first in a series towards the goal of experimenting with others. As far as Matt was concerned, the eighties "extended mix" was dead and the interpretation was the new direction to move in. Matt's version of "Shrunken Man" is also slightly different on this EP, more of a radio edit as it were.

Interpretations: Issue 2 - December Sunlight [Cried Out]

[label unknown [product code unknown], UK, CD, coming in late summer of 2002]

track listing

[track listing currently unknown, but apparently it's four tracks long]

notes

This second Interpretations EP is due out soon. One mix of "December Sunlight" that is most probably off this EP appears on "45 RPM". The Interpretation series stems from a project Matt started called The Others, of which this EP is a continuation, the goal of which is to experiment with others and let them experiment with him in turn. As far as Matt is concerned, the eighties "extended mix" is dead and the interpretation is the new direction to move in. When the EP comes out in June, we'll have a better idea of what to expect.
