Interview With Matt Johnson

[Epic [product code unknown], 22'23", US [NTSC], VHS, c.1989]

track listing

[various interview footage, also includes a video for The Beat[en] Generation]

notes

This simple promotional video from Epic comes in a simple black plastic case with no fanfare. It was released in an effort to promote Mind Bomb and includes a video for The Beat[en] Generation, as well as interview footage with Matt. I have no idea if the video is incorporated into the 22'23" timeframe advertised on the label. This footage is available nowhere else.

[company unknown [product code unknown], time unknown, US [NTSC], VHS, July 1989]

track listing

notes

Saw this one for sale on eBay, apparently coming from a New York based company that promotes on behalf of Epic, much like the "Interview With Matt Johnson" release. It includes a video for The Beat[en] Generation. It apparently comes in a plain white sleeve.

track listing

[includes a video for Gravitate To Me, which I'm assuming means the Dance Mix that appears on the Epic Dance Promotional Compilation Reel [see above].]

notes

Saw this one for sale on eBay, apparently coming from a New York based company that promotes on behalf of Epic, much like the "Interview With Matt Johnson" release. It includes a video for Gravitate To Me, but whether this is the same video as the one for the Dance Mix, I'm not sure.

Live In Japan

[label unknown [product code unknown], time unknown, country unknown [format unknown], Laserdisc, c.1990]
[label unknown [product code unknown], time unknown, Italy [PAL], VHS, c.1993-1995]

track listing

Interview, Sweet Bird Of Truth, Armageddon Days Are Here [Again], The Violence Of Truth, Heartland, Angel Of Deception, Infected, Uncertain Smile, Jealous Of Youth, Out Of The Blue [Into The Fire], Beyond Love, The Mercy Beat, Good Morning Beautiful, Flesh And Bones, I've Been Waiting For Tomorrow [All Of My Life], Giant

notes

I'm not sure whether the laserdisc was a bootleg or an official release, but I believe the VHS tape from Italy is a bootleg off the original laserdisc. It was apparently recorded live at Club Citta in Kawasaki, Japan on March 13th of 1990. The laserdisc is apparently called "Live In Japan", while the Italian video is called "Live At Club Citta, Kawasaki, Japan, March 13th, 1990". It also includes some interview footage of Matt in a terribly ugly pullover, that appeared on Japanese TV. The picture and sound are said to be quite good, but the VHS version isn't said to be as good. There is also a high quality audio bootleg of this show, ripped from the audio source on the laserdisc.

This is the video comprised of three shows filmed at the Royal Albert Hall in England during the "vs. The World" tour for the Mind Bomb album. I believe it was also available in PAL format, but I'm not entirely sure. It was directed by Tim Pope and the quality of picture and sound are quite good.

Dusk Video Press Kit

[Epic/Teletronics [TT-DVPK-S-010493E], 16'59", US [NTSC], VHS, January 1993]

track listing

Opening Credits, Gravitate To Me [excerpt with interview footage], Infected [excerpt with interview footage], Gravitate To Me [second excerpt with interview footage], Out Of The Blue [Into The Fire] [excerpt with interview footage], Slow Train To Dawn [excerpt with interview footage], Heartland [excerpt with interview footage], The Beat[en] Generation [excerpt with interview footage], Helpline Operator [excerpt using slow motion footage from "The The vs. The World" with interview footage], Love Is Stronger Than Death [excerpt using slow motion footage from "The The vs. The World" with interview footage], Dogs Of Lust [excerpt with interview footage]

notes

Apparently these were given out at a listening party for "Dusk", probably in New York City, but they may have been passed out elsewhere as well. This is a really nice piece of memorabilia. I'm not sure if it came with a press sheet, but the copy I bought on eBay didn't come with one. It's a simple white slipcover with a center cut-out to display the label. There is one label on the cassette, which reads "Dusk Video Press Kit". I'm not exactly sure what the product number is, but of the two shown in the graphics, I believe it's the longer one. The label incorrectly lists the time length as 17'11". The opening credits of the tape read "Matt Johnson", rather than the title listed on the label. You usually won't find these going for any less than $20 US on eBay and if you do, it's a steal.

At first I thought the tape would be a collection of videos from "Dusk". I was pleasantly suprised to find out it's actually an interview, with pieces of videos overlaid and mixed into the interview. The only video which gets a lot of viewing time is "Dogs Of Lust", which leads me to believe none of the other videos for "Dusk" had been shot at the time this promotional video was made, just prior to the release of "Dusk". "Helpline Operator" and "Love Is Stronger Than Death" appear, but both use slow motion footage from "The The vs. The World" as a visual. During the interviews, Matt talks about the making of the "Dogs of Lust" video, a four month long writer's block that was cured by beer and cigarettes, the difference between his various albums, his regrets towards not making "Armageddon Days Are Here [Again]" the main single off "Mind Bomb" instead of "The Beat[en] Generation", fear as a motivator for artists and musicians, working with a large groups of musicians as well as alone, and many other subjects. He spends a lot of time talking in depth about each of the albums he made and the period in which he was making them. More than a promo for "Dusk", it's rather a retrospective of The The's history and his thoughts on it. There is somebody interviewing him; you can hear him being asked questions. However, no credit is given as to who is asking the questions. This footage is available nowhere else.

Dogs of Lust

[company unknown [product code unknown], time unknown, UK [PAL], VHS, 1993]

track listing

Dogs Of Lust

notes

This PAL format promotional video for Dogs of Lust came out of the UK. The suprising thing about it is that, for a promotional video, it has rather nice packaging.

track listing

[track listing currently unknown]

notes

I'm not really sure whether "From Dusk Till Dawn" includes any live footage or what it exactly is. I know it includes videos for "Dogs of Lust", "Slow Emotion Replay" and "Love Is Stronger Than Death" but beyond that, I'm not sure. I've only seen it available in PAL video format, so being from Canada I haven't bought a copy of it because I can't view it here. I also have conflicting reports about the product codes on the Japanese version. Either there are two printings with separate codes or one edition and I've got the code wrong.

Nakedself Trailer

[Interscope [WO# 80354], 13'00", US [NTSC], VHS, c.late 1999]

track listing

Boiling Point [first excerpt], Opening Credits, Interview, Boiling Point [second excerpt], Interview, Shrunken Man [excerpt], Interview, Global Eyes [excerpt], Interview, December Sunlight [excerpt]

notes

This promotional video was released just slightly ahead of Naked Self in order to promote it. In it, Matt is interviewed by Zeke Manyika [ex-Orange Juice and ex-The The drummer on Soul Mining] concerning the new album and Matt's ever changing direction for The The. Throughout the interview appear clips of tracks off the album, accompanied by film footage that is undoubtedly from the same person who did the cover art for the album [similar themes to the footage, so I'm assuming here] and Matt appears throughout the footage. The video comes in a simple white slipcase with a cut-out showing the label on the videocassette, which has no label along the spine - nothing fancy here, but this is the only place you can get this footage and it's not available in any other format. The label on the videocassette also incorrectly lists the time on the tape at 13'35" instead of the actual time of 13'00".

Nuremberg, Germany

[bootleg [bootleg], 45'00", country unknown [format unknown], VHS, 2000]

track listing

[track listing currently unknown]

notes

This bootleg video from The The's Nuremberg show in Germany during the World Tour Of Tiny Spaces, has good sound and great picture quality I'm told, but I don't know much more about it than that. I'm assuming it's a PAL format video from Germany, but I really don't know. It's almost certainly a bootleg.

35 mm

[label unknown [production code unknown], time unknown, country unknown, DVD boxed set, coming in 2002]

track listing

[This DVD boxed set will apparently include most of the major The The video work from the past such as "Infected", "From Dusk Till Dawn", "The The vs. The World" and perhaps some other stuff that's rare or unreleased, we'll just have to see.]

notes

This boxed set of DVDs is set for release in late 2002 I think. It apparently will include "Infected", "From Dusk Till Dawn" and "The The vs. The World", and quite possibly some other material as well. This will be great for people in the US, who had no way of viewing "From Dusk Till Dawn" as it's never been released in NTSC format before.
